Imagine having a built-in GPS that doesn’t require a satellite or a battery. For the world’s sea turtles, this isn't science fiction—it's survival.
Our project, The Magnetic Mariners, brings this invisible world to life for students. We’ve designed seven customized turtle models, each representing one of the unique sea turtle variants found in our oceans. But these aren't just toys; they are "living" compasses.
How the Game Works
Using hidden magnetic tape and refrigerator magnets tucked beneath a "habitat map," students must guide their turtles across a vast, invisible landscape.
The Challenge: Each turtle species has a specific breeding ground.
The "Superpower": As the children move their turtles, the internal magnetic sensors (ferromagnetic pins) react to the hidden "magnetic signatures" of the map.
The Discovery: Just like real hatchlings, the students "feel" the pull of the field, learning to recognize the specific magnetic coordinates that signal they've reached home.
